In the short story "A Pair of Silk Stockings" by Kate Chopin, the main character Mrs. Sommers finds fifteen
dollars from an unknown source. She appears to be extremely excited, walking around for two days in a dreamy state. Eventually,
she thinks about how she will spend the money, so as not to waste it. Her first thought is to use the money to buy clothes
and hats for her children and to use the rest of the money to buy a pair of stockings for herself. She thinks of her past
when she used to have money to spend on anything she had desired. As Mrs. Sommers is shopping, she finds several
silk stockings on sale. In her size she finds a lovely black pair and decides to buy them. Then, she goes into the dressing
room and puts on her new stockings with a new feeling of satisfaction. Then, instead of using the money on her kids like she
had planned, she buys a new pair of gloves and boots. Next, she decides to go out in public with all of her new things on.
She purchases a few magazines and goes into a café to read them. While in the café, Mrs. Sommers orders a nice meal with wine.
After leaving the café, she sees a poster for a matinee and decides to use the remaining money to watch a play. There she
observes all of the nicely dressed people, and she feels like she belongs. When the play is over, Mrs. Sommers realizes her
day is coming to an end and that she has spent all of her money. She takes the bus home and wishes her day will never end.
